This workshop starts with a presentation of the core concepts necessary to create a professional storyboard for film. A brief introduction to narrative concepts is followed by storyboard essentials, which are camera angles, shot progression, staging and narrative rhythms. The presentation is complemented with exercises where students can apply and practice the tools learnt. Students will learn and experiment with concepts such as stepping forward, corresponding shots, inserting shots and narrative planning.
Lena Irmgard Merhej (PhD) studied Graphic Design at the American University of Beirut (BGD) and majored in Design and Technology at the Parsons School of Design (MFA). Her research, “ Analysis of Graphic Narratives: War in Lebanese Comics” at Jacobs University in Bremen, granted her a doctorate degree in Visual Studies in 2015. Lena was a Lecturer at the American University of Beirut and at the Lebanese American University. Now she teaches at the Lebanese International University. She gave various workshops in animation, illustration and comic books. Her animation “Drawing the War”(2002), her comic book, "Kamen Sine" (Another year)(2009), and her book “Mrabba w Labban” (Yogurt and Jam)(2011) took international awards as well as the comics magazine Samandal that she co-founded and is an active member in.
