US Media, Money and Politics: Palestine Solidarity, Campus Activism and Zionist Backlash by Dr. Rabab Abdulhadi

About the Lecture:

This lecture and discussion will address political communication in the US and the resilience of the Palestinian solidarity movement, including campus activism, given the media backlash and rise of Zionist McCarthyism.

About the Lecturer:

Dr. Rabab Abdulhadi is Director and Senior Scholar of Arab and Muslim Ethnicities and Diasporas at San Francisco State University. Before SFSU, she was the first director of the Center for Arab American Studies at University of Michigan-Dearborn. Previously, Dr. Abdulhadi worked as an international journalist based at the UN Headquarters in New York for 10 years.

A founding editorial board member of Islamophobia Studies Journal, Dr. Abdulhadi co-authored Mobilizing Democracy: Changing US Policy in the Middle East; and coedited several anthologies, including American Quarterly’s Forum on Palestine and American Studies; Arab and Arab American Feminisms: Gender, Violence and Belonging, winner of the 2012 National Arab American non-fiction Book Award; American Quarterly Forum on Palestine and American Studies; and a special issue of MIT Electronic Journal of Middle East Studies. Her honors include the Sterling Fellowship, Phi Beta Kappa, Yale’s Prize Teaching Fellowship; AUC Teaching Excellence Award; New Century Scholarship, Courage Awards from Al-Awda and American Muslims for Palestine; Arab Women’s Feminist Union and Muslim Youth Movement (Durban, South Africa).

Dr. Abdulhadi will be visiting Beirut in travel from South Africa to Palestine. In South Africa, she co-organized the first international conference on “Teaching Palestine: Pedagogical Praxis and the Indivisibility of Justice” (LINK: https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=10156564688688778&set=a.10150671499818778&type=3&theater or  https://www.facebook.com/events/2348610735213905/?active_tab=about). The lecture will be presented in Arabic and simultaneous interpretation will be available in English on https://meet.jit.si/LAUCommArts.
